The Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) has identified Automotive Parts and Agriculture Machinery Manufacturing as key sectors for support from MoST R&D organizations.
In line with these directions, STEDEC Technology Commercialization Corporation of Pakistan initiated an exploratory session with Pakistan Association of Automotive Parts Accessories Manufacturers (PAAPAM) at their head office Lahore on 11th January 2017.
PAAPAM members who participated in the meeting were Mr. Saeed iqbal Khan, senior vice chairman PAAPAM; Mr. Mumshad Ali, former Chairman PAAPAM; Mr. Rehan Riaz, Management Committee member; and Mr. Iftikhar Ahmad, Management Committee member. MoST was represented in the meeting by Dr. Sakhawat Ali, Director General PCSIR Lahore; Engr. Muhammad Irfan, PCSIR Lahore; Engr Liaqat Hussain, PCSIR Lahore; Ms. Noreen Khan, Manager Commercialization STEDEC and Syed Raza Abbas Shah, Managing Director STEDEC.
PAAPAM informed that the Automotive Parts industry has made great strides and is now providing the foreign car manufactures in Pakistan with majority of the parts according to international standards. The industry is providing more than 70% of body parts to the car industry and more than 90% to the motorcycle and tractor manufacturers. The industry has more than 3,000 vendors out of which approximately 700 are tier one manufactures of automotive parts. The industry is employing more than 500,000 people directly and is now amongst the top ten contributors to government tax revenues. They further informed that the industry is now incorporating more and more technology and making efforts to become export oriented. Participants from PAAPAM indicated their requirements in certification, testing facilities and acquisition of trained manpower to further the growth of the industry and tapping the export market.
Dr Sakhawat briefed the notable members about facilities and capabilities within PCSIR, which can be used to support PAAPAM member companies in areas of coating technology, testing facilities and technical trained manpower for serving the automotive sector. MD STEDEC, Syed Raza Abbas Shah, assured MoST’s support in assisting PAAPAM in becoming an internationally competitive industry, and proposed joint PAAPAM-PCSIR R&D towards achieving the objectives in this sector.
It was mutually decided that STEDEC will arrange a visit for PAAPAM members to PCSIR Laboratories Complex Lahore so that members can familiarize themselves firsthand about the indigenous research, facilities and capabilities within PCSIR and how this could be productively deployed to the benefit of the automotive parts industry.
